“Cello Songs” is one of the first of my sonata length works for solo instrument and piano. The three movements become progressively more interior. The first movement is powerfully aggressive for more than half its length, arriving at a bravura C-major climax area before finding and extended release in beautiful melody and a persistent walking rhythm.

The second movement opens with quietly veiled harmonies and colors, out of which emerges a powerful dramatic scene, as if in a dream. The movement finishes with a long and languid release of all tensions.

The third movement, marked “pure, innocent”, is ethereal and floating, never rising high in dynamics.
